HOW TO CHOOSE A PHYSICAL THERAPIST

In our last newsletter we talked about the patients’ ability and right to choose where they go for Physical Therapy and who provides their care.

The next question that follows is, “How do I choose?”

When we are in need of any type of service, we often go to someone that we had a previous experience with or who is recommended by a friend or family member. At Choice Physical Therapy, that is often the case and through the years we have had the privilege of taking care of multi-generations of families!  Today, there is an abundance of information that people can acquire online, which has become another important avenue and we get many inquiries through our website which is full of amazing information and videos!

When choosing the right Physical Therapist for you, here are some questions to consider ….

1. Are the physical therapists at the practice experienced and do they work to learn new skills/get new certifications?

A bigger toolbox mean more options for treatment and less of a cookie cutter approach.  At Choice Physical Therapy, our Physical Therapists are highly experienced and hold advanced degrees and certifications.  As a company we require continuing education and sponsor onsite education. Our therapists are educated in Active Release Techniques®, Graston Technique®, Vestibular Assessment and Treatment, and Selective Functional Movement Screening just to name a few.

2. Can I get in in a timely manner?

No one wants to deal with pain for a long period of time and the longer you are unable to function the more complex the issue may become … your body gets stiffer and weaker. At Choice Physical Therapy we can get you in to see one of our physical therapists within 24 hours in most cases, which means your injury can be assessed quicker and we can get you started with an appropriate treatment plan right away!

3. Is the facility within an easy distance from me?

The location of a physical therapy practice can contribute to your ability to be consistent with follow up which is very important to your recovery. Choice Physical Therapy of Vermont has three convenient locations in Barre, Berlin (@ First in Fitness) and in Williston.  We also have a location in St. Albans.

4. Are there options for treatment times before and after work or school?

We understand that minimizing your time out of work or school while remaining consistent with your treatments is very important to you.  Choice Physical Therapy has appointments as early 6:30 and 7:00 am and we are open until 7:00 pm.  We work hard to work with you and your schedule!

5. Will I see the same therapist each time?

Consistency of care means less time spent learning who you are and what your needs are. The evaluating therapist has already done that, and has begun the process.   Your therapist develops the correct treatment plan for your needs and recovery, and moves it forward with each visit.  At Choice PT you will see the same therapist throughout your treatment.

5. Will I need a referral from my physician?

Vermont is a “Direct Access” state, meaning that a patient is able to make an appointment and be evaluated ‘directly’ by a physical therapist without a referral from a physician. Many common musculoskeletal injuries such as back and neck strains or knee pain can be assessed by the professionals at Choice Physical Therapy and a treatment plan established at the time of your first appointment. Direct Access and your ability to come to our practice without your doctor’s referral by no means circumvents your relationship with your doctor. Following our evaluation, we will communicate with your physician and make them aware of our findings. If your progression with our treatment is not as expected we will contact your physician immediately by phone to discuss your situation.
